Dene Wood ‘Working the Clumber Landscape’ Live Lecture

This talk and all our lectures are FREE for Friends of the Botanical Gardens to attend. Members of the public are also welcome to join us on payment of £5 at the door on the day. Live talks are held in the Education Centre in the grounds of the Botanical Gardens - easily accessed via the Thompson Road Entrance.

Clumber is an incredible 3800 acre Grade 1 listed Parkland located near Worksop in Nottinghamshire. As Head Gardener, Dene Wood has the challenging task of providing a nourishing experience for over 700,000 visitors a year to Clumber - the National Trust’s busiest pay-for-entry property - whilst ensuring nature, beauty and history are priorities.

In this talk, Dene will share some of the horticultural and heritage projects his team have delivered in recent years and share thoughts around what the coming years will likely bring for an historical estate that is an essential green space for so many people.

Dene started his career in horticulture when he won an HBGBS apprenticeship place at Chatsworth House where he worked for 2 years.  His next challenge was in Norfolk where he helped restore/rejuvenate the 6 acre Walled Kitchen Garden at Norfolk’s Treasure House, Holkham Hall, working his way to the Head Gardener position.

Longing for home, he moved back to Yorkshire where he took the role of Head Gardener at Clumber Park, where he has been for the last 6 years.   Dene is a qualified Garden Designer and looking to start the RHS MHORT qualification in autumn.
