Heritage Open Days

The Friends were delighted to take part in this year’s Heritage Open Days, for which the theme was ‘Everyday Histories.’ We ran a series of short tours, introducing six people who have been influential in the Gardens. They include Robert Marnock who laid out the Gardens, the son of a gardener who played on the Bear pit and the magnificently named Hephzibah Emma Butterworth who helped negotiate the sale of the Gardens to the Town Trust.

A leaflet promoting a longer tour from Broomhall Library, through the Gardens and on to the General Cemetery is available, which introduces 18 people who made contributions to Sheffield in all sorts of ways, from pioneering vegetarianism during WW2 to helping save the Gardens from dereliction.
